- Issue 1
On Saturday, September 21 the Lancer Family came together to pay tribute to our coach, mentor and friend Joe Faccone. This event was sponsored and hosted by the Joe Faccone ‘PLAY BALL’ committee and Kennedy Catholic High School.
The lineup included a Home Run Derby, food, a Lancer baseball archive and a bit of fundraising for Joe’s passion: baseball. Joe served as baseball coach at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School (now Kennedy Catholic) from 1970 – 2007. During that time, he had 2 State championships (1973 and 1999), 4 final four appearances, 15 sweet 16 appearances, 7 league championships, 4 coach of the year awards and 501 career wins.
He was also a beloved member of the school staff for almost 50 years.
Fr. Batterberry opened the event with prayer and President Mike Prato offered the welcome. “Joe was an encourager, a mentor and a spiritual role model. It was his love for his faith, his parish and his God that I will always keep with me.”
Mike Yellam ’05 commented afterward, “Joe made sure the sun was shining at Faccone Field on Saturday. After two weeks of early September rain, I thought for sure we would be soaking wet by the end of the event. Instead, I have a sun burn on the back of my neck! What amazed me most was how consistent the message was from all of the speakers. Players who represented a span of four decades had very similar stories and experiences with Coach Faccone. Listening to us, you might have thought we all got together at Angelos and stole content from each other. It shows that the man never compromised on his mission. After all those years, he stayed true to his values, his players and the game.”
A very special thank you to the members of the ‘PLAY BALL’ committee, our volunteers and facilities team for their support and planning for this event. From the very beginning the goal was to honor Joe in a way he would have loved – and we are pretty sure it was a home run. Way to go team!
